Origin
Our natural Eiffel tables are made of FSC recycled teak wood and carry the FSC logo. This type of teak wood comes from old plantations in Indonesia. The origin of this wood is responsible because the plantations are sustainably managed by the Indonesian government.
Teak has been a favorite hardwood for furniture, construction and shipbuilding for centuries, also because it is very durable and suitable for outdoor use. Teak wood is native to India, Thailand, Laos and Myanmar, but due to extensive logging, it only grows in natural forests in Myanmar.
In Indonesia it was introduced in the 16th century and large plantations were established during the Dutch colonial period. After Indonesia became independent, the Indonesian government managed the plantations. This has been quite successful, as teak is a valuable wood and it has always been economical to replant teak after felling trees.
Almost all the teak wood in Indonesia used for furniture production comes from these plantations. Only for local use is sometimes used teak from small farms near villages. Because it does not grow in Indonesia’s natural forests, no tropical forests are cut down for teak wood.
Since 2016, the Indonesian government has regulated all timber trade, with a system to trace all timber back to its source, where the trees were felled. This is part of a FLEGT trade agreement with the EU, to ensure that only legal timber is imported into the EU. These aspects together make teak production in Indonesia and its use for furniture both economically and environmentally sustainable.
