The Patera Oval is part of the Patera family of pendant lights, designed by Øivind Slaatto and launched in collaboration with Louis Poulsen in 2015. The Patera pendant light is a modern take on the classic chandelier, bringing a bright spotlight and soft, dynamic illumination to contemporary spaces. Patera’s 360-degree glare-free illumination is the result of an elaborate design of differently positioned cells that bathe the surrounding spaces, people, and objects in natural, even, and flattering light. Its shape radiates beauty everywhere. Its structure, based on the Fibonacci sequence, creates a different impression from every vantage point. “My ultimate goal was to create a three-dimensional Sudoku puzzle. This commission was steeped in mathematics. It is, in fact, the most complex chandelier I’ve made to date. I believe it expresses poetry, and my intention was to build a chandelier for modern times. I hope people will sense its inspiration when they are near it; hopefully, it will generate life.” (Øivind Slaatto) With the Patera Oval, Øivind Slaatto and Louis Poulsen aimed to create a pendant lamp with a light and minimalist form, providing a modern yet timeless luminaire suitable for spaces with low ceilings. Although the Patera Oval is based on the same principles and captivating, hand-woven design as the classic Patera, it does not represent a sphere, but rather a flat, circular shape that appears oval when viewed from the side and is inspired by the organic shapes of an ellipsoid. The Patera Oval features a round opening to optimize the direction of light toward the surface below, with a smooth transition to reflected light. With its flat, minimalist design, the Patera Oval fits perfectly in spaces with low ceilings or where overhead space is needed. This pendant light is also perfect suspended from a high ceiling or over a dining table to create space between the table and the ceiling.
